Hebrews 12:1-2a

"Let us lay aside every weight,
and the sin which so easily ensnares us,
and let us run with Endurance
the race that is set before us,
looking unto Jesus,
the author and finisher of our faith."
Hebrews 12:1-2a

Opportunities - Day 85

Today was my first full day at The Gazette office -- Jim took me and then drove to Central City to see Waldo, his hospice client. He has been visiting with him via phone since May. This is only the second day Jim has driven by himself.

Yesterday, Aug. 4, Jim had his consultation with Dr. Morio at Morgan & Morio Oral Dentistry re: pulling #18 molar. That event is now scheduled for Aug. 31.

We have been attending Vacation Bible School this week at Immanuel.  Yesterday, just before supper we received a call from First Federated Church in Lisbon. It is non-denominational I think. They would like Jim to continue preaching - just to let them know when we wouldn't be available. What a journey the Lord has put us on this year. Up and down. And what a learning experience in faith and trust.

We have 4 1/2 cases of Osmolite 1.2 cal nutrition drink that will be making its way to southern Illinois this weekend via friend Marla. She is taking it for possible use by her brother, Gene, who is battling stomach and esophageal cancer. If he's unable to use it and no one else is in need of it, she'll bring it back to us.

Moving Forward - Day 31

Today marks 1 month since Jim's first surgery to remove the cancer in his esophagus.

I didn't sleep well. Woke first at 3 a.m., after 4 hours of sleep, then at 5 and then decided to get up at 5:30. Made some hot green ginger tea and settled down for Bible study.

I read about the Lord being my song and pursued that ....

"Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid
For YAH, the Lord is my strength and song;"
(Isaiah 12:2)

"Sing to Him a new song." (Psalm 33:3a)

"I waited patiently for the Lord,
And He inclined to me,
And heard my cry
He also brought me up
out of a horrible pit,
out of the miry clay,
and set my feet upon arock,
and established my steps.
He has put a new song in my mouth -
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear;
and will trust in the Lord."

(Psalm 40:1-3)

My writings ...

Behold!
See!
Look!
Yahweh
My Lord
My Salvation
My Strength
My Song

My Song
of Praise
new
for every moment
a new song
where I have been
where I am now
wait silent
for Him
My Lord
who moves me
upon the rock
of His Son
My Jesus
a new song given
to me
my footsteps established
my handholds tightened
my mouth sweetness overflowing
praises come.

7:05 a.m. - Jim called. The doctors just left. The report is good ... great .... actually excellent!

A resection was not necessary. Part of the colon was twisted, so it was untwisted. The area where the blockage was was cleaned out. The NG tube will be taken out in 2 days and he will resume a full liquid diet.

Jim said the doctors commented, "It wasn't as bad as they thought it could have been."

The pain button attached to the IV is back in place (like what he used right after the first surgery), so he can receive medication every 6 minutes as needed. Jim said it is real painful when he hiccups or coughs.

The nurses will be getting him up today for short walks.

Plan is he will be able to go home by Wednesday.

Hallalujah! Praise the Lord!

UnityPoint Home Medical came by shortly after noon to pick up the IV pole, travel backpack and feeding pump. It's up to us to get rid of the nutritional supplement - we have 4 cases and 2 weeks worth of IV bags that we no longer need. Jim thought Hospice Compassas could use them or maybe one of our readers. If you are interested, let us know.

We talked with each other through the day. He took 3 walks and sat up in the chair as often. His tummy still is painful.

I arrived at his doorstep shortly after 6:30. We had the room to ourselves for a while, until his new roommate, Mike, got settled in. Mike's arrival was brought about through a heart attack.

Jim and I took a walk down to the visitor lounge and looked at photos I took of our improved bath tub area  upstairs. I left the hospital at 9:15 p.m.

Recovery - Day 4

Jim had a better night of sleeping. Another x-ray of his stomach was taken and sometime during the night he finished the container of nutrition, nicknamed "chocolate milk." He is now on 60 milliliters per hour - that is where it will stay until he discontinues it.

He is constantly complaining of being tired. Even though everyone says how good his color is, he frequently asks why he doesn't feel as good as he looks. One of the surgeons who assisted with a lung transplant yesterday stopped in to see Jim this morning and told him his procedure is right up there with open-heart surgery. So he's tired because of the type of surgery and also because of the pain medication - type and frequency.

Bandy Andy Bear (the bunny) is eating. He hasn't been eating for a couple of weeks because of concern for his daddy.

Jim just called (again) at 10:15 a.m. He said the pain meds coming via IV have been discontinued and he was given an injection through his feeding tube (J-tube). This is how he will receive his pain medication going forward and I will be instructed on how to do this for him.

I brought the over-the-bed table up from the basement. Jim wanted me to find the bed wedge he thought we still had, but I haven't been successful so far. May need to buy a new one, an inexpensive new one, unless someone has one they are not using that we can borrow.

Blake from UnityPoint Home Medical arrived at 11 a.m. He brought 8-plus cases of Osmolite 1.2 high-protein nutrition, an IV-pole, a travel pack for church and other nearby outings, plastic bags for the nutrition and for water to flush, plus the pump. And of course lots of paperwork to sign. I sure hope Blue Cross picks up the tab, since the total comes in at $1406 -- $630 alone just for the nutrition every month.

It was 2 p.m. before I arrived at UIHC. Very quiet on the floor. I learned how to inject the pain medicine into his J-tube. Jim and I did it in tandem - he operated the on-off valve and I did the flushing and medicine delivery. The nurse said Jim could even do it himself if necessary. That's useful information for when I have an appointment.

Jim walked twice today, further distances, and walked me to the elevator when I left for the day. We look for ways to bring some normalcy to our time together.

Today was a frustrating day for me. I didn't sleep well and woke up with a painful left ankle, hip and wrist. I misplaced my wrist brace.

I wrote a poem (see below) that I didn't do well at living up to. I wasn't focusing on the Lord, but on every little thing that only added bumps to my road. It was not a smooth day.

Here's the poem:

Whatever the plan
realize
it never permanent
only possibly
happening
a tentative plan

We do not know
what God has
in mind
for our day

Stay where you are
concentrate
the task at hand
to do
before other things
you think need
to be done

You have much
on your mind
focus on My Presence
let all else
fade away

Pray
Rest
Anticipate
Trust

Step by step
moment by moment
He will guide
our movement

He is our Lord and Savior
Be one
with God
not separated
alone to self
but together
with God alone.

I am unsure of my capabilities, unsure how much I can handle, unsure how I can balance work and caring for Jim, unsure I will do it well or even good enough.
